Jihadist behind yesterday’s attack on a department store in Lugano

The police enter Switzerland identified the young Swiss woman, who yesterday Tuesday he grabbed one woman by the throat and wounded a second with a knife in a department store in Lugano, as a well-known jihadist.

The Italian-speaking federal prosecutors of the Ticino canton described the incident as a terrorist attack and launched an investigation.

“The perpetrator is known to Fedpol from police investigations in 2017 in jihadist circles,” the Swiss federal police said on Twitter.

The 28-year-old responsible who lives in the area is in custody after a passerby managed to immobilize her until the police arrived at the scene of the attack. The Swiss media, citing eyewitnesses, reported that the woman shouted that she belonged to the Islamic State during the attack.

One of the victims has serious injuries, but his life is not in danger. The second woman is slightly injured.

Norman Gobi, the prime minister of Ticino, stressed that Switzerland is a peaceful country and the canton a safe area. “One more reason to condemn this unreasonable violence, which is instigated by extremism and has no place in our community,” he added.

Switzerland has so far escaped major jihadist attacks, such as those that this month prompted France and Germany to demand tighter borders with the EU, after Islamist rebels killed eight people in Paris, Nice and Vienna in one month.

Two men were arrested in the city of Winterthur, near Zurich, this month for alleged ties to the perpetrator of a November 2 jihadist attack in Vienna that resulted in the death of four people. The two detainees reportedly visited the attacker in July.

In September, a man described by Swiss media as the “Emir of Windertour” and considered one of Switzerland’s leading jihadists was sentenced to 50 months in prison for his ties to the Islamic State.

Federal prosecutors also said they are investigating whether the knife attack on a Portuguese in September in the western Swiss town of Morges had “terrorist motives.”
