Jaden Smith had trouble filming some emotional scenes from the film Life in a year. The actor plays the character of Daryn dealing with a whirlwind of emotions after standing up to his parents. Mitja Okorn, the director of the film, talked about it Cheatsheet about how Jaden ran into a number of problems while shooting those particular scenes involving the shadow of her parents — Will Smith and Jada Smith. Okorn spoke to the portal and mentioned how he helped the actor to phase out the problems and deliver the scenes.

The film Life in a year comes from Smith’s production house called Overbook. Thus, Will and Jada were often on set monitoring and guiding him. The director of the film said that often Jaden would have ideas for certain scenes by talking to his father, Will Smith. Mitja said she loved having Will on set and the input he provided. However, there was a scene where Jaden ran into trouble while performing.
The director said a scene where Jaden stands up to his mother in the film was one of the hardest scenes for him. In the film, Jaden’s character falls in love with Isabelle played by Cara Delevingne. She soon discovers that she is suffering from cancer and may soon lose her life. This begins to affect his attention and Jaden’s Daryn loses several college applications. His father in the film is upset by his behavior and tries to stop him. His mother in the film also prevents Jaden from falling into a negative phase.

Okorn remembers a particular scene where his mother yells at Jaden to stop going somewhere and then they fight enormously. However, Jaden found it incredibly difficult to film those particular sequences. The director said that Jaden is well-mannered and therefore would often stop when his mother asked him, which was not required in the scene. The scene involved Jaden acting like a rebel and moving out or causing a fight.
However, Jaden would find it difficult and often told Mitja that he would stop if an elderly person said it out of respect. Mitja said that Jaden was programmed in such a way as to break the character and therefore it became difficult for him to continue the scene. However, after several takes, he made Jaden sit down to help him understand the psyche of the character he was playing. She told him that despite his love and respect for the elders, his character in the film is at loggerheads with his parents and therefore he would have to rebel and fight against them. Eventually Jaden got the scene right and was added to the movie, which is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
