“It’s really nice to be part of that generation” – Dest happy to lead the new wave of Barcelona stars

The defender, along with young stars like Pedri and Ansu Fati, is expected to be a key figure at Camp Nou in the future

Sergino Dest said he likes to be part of the next generation of Barcelona stars as the full-back quickly adapts to life at Camp Nou this season.

Dest has become a key figure at Barcelona since his summer transfer from Ajax, starting four games so far, including El Clasico against Real Madrid last month.

The 20-year-old is part of a talented youth group at Camp Nou, which also includes teenage stars Pedri and Ansu Fati.

As key figures like Lionel Messi, Gerard Pique and Sergio Busquets move closer to the mid-1930s, Barca will increasingly lean on their younger options moving forward.

And Dest said he is looking forward to growing at Barca with his talented young teammates.

“It’s really cool to be a part of that generation,” Dest said ESPN. “I think it’s also nice to play with a couple of young players so they can adapt to the level.

“That way, [Barca] they already have players for the future. I think it’s really smart that Barca do it right now and give us a chance to improve faster. “

Dest has already demonstrated his versatility under Ronald Koeman this season, being deployed as both a left-back and a right-back.

Although the US international has admitted that he prefers to play on the right, he is happy to play wherever his manager puts him on the pitch.

“Right or left back, it doesn’t matter to me,” Dest said. “I play where the coach needs me. If I have to play on the left wing, I play on the left wing. It doesn’t matter, I just want to play, but to be honest I think I’m more comfortable on the right side.”

Dest is adapting quickly to Barcelona but admitted it is still difficult to avoid being hit by a star when looking around during matches and during training.

“I always go out with my qualities and try to play with it. Sometimes when I look [my team-mates] on the pitch I say, “Wow, I saw you on TV a couple of years ago.”

“Now I play with the best player in the world (Lionel Messi). That’s great!”

On training with Messi, Dest added: “Yes, he is really, really good. He has amazing moments, just a joy to watch.”
