One of the busiest pubs in the capital accepts an invisible currency.
This pint will get you back 0.0094 Bitcoin – the digital form of money – at the Baggot Inn in Dublin.
The popular downtown bar this week has become one of the first pubs in the country to accept electronic currency in exchange for a pint.
The bar took him for the first time during a Tuesday night trial, and the management said they had been overwhelmed by the response since then.
The purchase of a virtual cash drink offers you a 10-point discount in the establishment, and your standard Guinness pint will only cost you 0.0094 Bitcoin – the equivalent of € 4.50.
Bitcoin was launched for the first time six years ago and is electronically exchanged via computer in a peer-to-peer network.
The value of the currency fluctuates daily, and a Bitcoin was last night equal to over € 460.
Skeptic
However, it still needs to receive the seal of approval from the Central Bank of Ireland, leaving many people skeptical about its value.
And earlier this week, a hacking scandal shook the currency after over 400,000 euros were stolen by a Canadian Bitcoin bank.
Despite this, Bitcoin has had a phenomenal success, with fans from all over the world who met in groups to use it.
"The idea of bringing it to the pub started last December," said Chris Healy of The Baggot Inn.
"It was an idea of a client who was in one of these meetings.
"He mentioned to the manager that he thought it was interesting."
Chris, who serves as head of marketing and events for the popular pub, said that so far the introduction of the new form of money "was great" for everyone involved.
The process of buying a drink with Bitcoin is as fast as a cash transaction, and Chris said Tuesday's test "went very well".
"You come and essentially make your order as you would normally do an order," he added.
"I will insert it in the system that we have here on our tablet, then we will display the QR code that the client will have to analyze.
"They access the digital wallet on their smartphone, scan the code and then simply click" send. "It only takes a couple of seconds."
The management at the pub said it will officially launch the digital currency at the bar next week.
They also revealed that they are planning to install a special Bitcoin ATM, which they imported from America.
But the country's first Bitcoin ATM will be installed in Hippety's Cafe in Temple Bar this weekend.
The car in the Baggot Inn will operate slightly differently, however, revealed Chris.
"What we're getting allows you to buy both directions – you can buy or sell Bitcoin here," he said.
