Hacettepe University (HU) Faculty of Medicine, Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Professor. Dr. Okan Bülent Yıldız made statements on the impact of obesity on Covid-19 and the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic on obesity.

Stating that nearly 2 billion people in the world have overweight or obesity problems and that the number of Kovid-19 cases has reached 40 million, Yıldız said that scientific studies have recently been conducted to assess the relationship between obesity and Covid. -19.

Pointing out that obesity has a significant effect on the course of Covid-19 disease, Yıldız provided the following information on the meta-analysis study in which they assessed the results of research conducted around the world at Hacettepe University so far:

“After scanning all the obesity and Covid-19 studies worldwide, we evaluated the results of 19 studies that met the eligibility criteria with a meta-analysis. The data we obtained shows that in individuals with obesity, the need for hospitalization due to Covid-19, intensive care and respiratory system requires up to 80%. On the other hand, we have established that obesity does not increase the risk of death in patients with Covid-19 hospitalized in intensive care . Mild to moderate obesity may also have some protective effect in the ICU. This situation is called the obesity paradox. “

Yıldız stated that the meta-analysis article will be published in an international scientific journal at the end of the evaluation phase.

NUTRITION, SLEEP, STRESS MANAGEMENT AND EXERCISE MATERIAL

Prof. Dr. Yıldız, drawing attention to the importance of adequate physical activity during the day during this period, said: “Although the increase in time spent at home during the pandemic period, the decrease in physical activity , deterioration in sleep patterns and high stress and obesity make weight control difficult in people who do not have weight problems, can cause weight gain over time, he said.

He noted the following regarding things to do to prevent weight gain during the pandemic period:

“I describe the measures that can be taken with the 4 letter word” BUSE “. The letter” B “nutrition. A healthy and balanced diet is absolutely necessary for this. The letter” U “represents sleep. Watch news and programs related to Covid-19, which disrupts sleep patterns and increases stress.

During the coronavirus epidemic, there is the spread of false and misleading news, called infodemics, more dangerous and faster than the virus. After all, 6-8 hours of uninterrupted nighttime sleep is important instead of watching them late. The letter “S” indicates stress. Stress management is very important. Because the higher the stress level in a person, the harder it is to lose weight. Depending on the stress, the body begins to retain excess fat, especially around the waist. So the health risk increases.

If the last letter is “E”, it is exercise. It is not possible to control the weight without moving. For this reason, during the period of the epidemic, sufficient exercise should be done by obeying the rules of physical distance indoors or out. “
