Currently the new Apple iPhones carry the A14 Bionic processor with a 5-nanometer (nm) lithography. And TSMC is the manufacturer who is responsible for making these same chips.
However, according to some predictions, Apple could launch its 2022 iPhones already with 4-nanometer processors.
Apple recently launched its iPhone 12 line, already equipped with the new A14 Bionic processor. It is a 5 nanometer (5 nm) chip and TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) is responsible for the mass production of these components. However, the manufacturer's capacity is limited and production of these chips is already in full swing by the second quarter of 2021.
But the forecasts indicate an evolution of Apple regarding the lithography of its processors.

TrendForce advisor has released its manufacturing report and has very optimistic outlook for next year.
As for semiconductor manufacturers, this sector is dominated by TSMC and Samsung. These two produce chips for companies like Qualcomm, AMD, MediaTek, and Apple.
Currently the most recent lithograph is 5 nanometers, used in the A14 Bionic chip of the new iPhone 12. But the consultant predicts that, although in 2021 the production line of Apple's smartphones will remain at 5 nm, the new iPhones of 2022 already have it. 4-nanometer lithography.
Therefore, the 4nm chips will be part of the possible A16 processor that will arrive with the new iPhones in two years. But in 2021 the 5nm lithography will still be maintained on the alleged A15 processor. According to TrendForce, this A15 chip will then be produced in the N5P process, which is expected to start later this year.
In summary, the better the value of the production process, the more modern and advanced the integrated technology. But ultimately that number is unrelated to the nanometer size, despite the name.
