The Spanish societies of internal medicine (SEMI) and primary care (SEMERGEN) have developed a new “ Protocol for the continuity of care for patients diagnosed with COVID-19 (SEMI-SEMERGEN) ‘, whose contents and main keys are detailed in the 41st National Congress of the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (SEMI), which takes place virtually.
Under the moderation of Dr. Carmen Díaz Pedroche, internist at the Internal Medicine Service of Hospital 12 de Octubre, this protocol establishes an algorithm with criteria for the long-term follow-up of patients diagnosed with COVID-19 based on the severity of its clinical picture and complications during acute infection.
The document distinguishes and classifies patients based on their clinical picture, severity and / or complication criteria and also establishes the criteria for conducting an electronic consultation or a specific post-COVID-19 telephone consultation with Internal Medicine. In addition, it also determines which general and specific analytical and functional tests are recommended based on the patient’s evolution.
One of the main objectives of the document is to maintain continuity of care, standardize criteria in the follow-up, especially considering persistent symptoms or possible sequelae, and avoid duplication of visits and overloading the health system.
The authors of the protocol, which has the unconditional collaboration of ESTEVE Pharmaceuticals, are Alfonso Barquilla García, Esther del Corral, Carmen Díaz Pedroche, Carlos Lumbreras Bermejo, Vicente Martín Sánchez, Álvaro Morán Bayón, Francisco Navarro Romero and José Polo García.
