Borussia Mönchengladbach miss the first of two chances to advance to the Champions League knockout stage for the first time in the club’s history. The Gladbachers lose at home to Inter 2: 3.
The second possibility will be more difficult for the Gladbacher to grasp: in the last match of the group they will play for Real. If they lose in Madrid, they will only progress if Inter and Shakhtar Donetsk draw in a parallel match.
Mönchengladbach’s double goal, Alassane Pléa, was able to make up for the first few seconds of deficit before half-time. But midway through the second half, striker Romelu Lukaku put Inter ahead by two goals. It was just enough to connect. The alleged 3: 3 again achieved by Pléa was revoked after the consultation of the VAR due to offside. Denis Zakaria and Breel Embolo from the Swiss parliamentary group near Gladbach boarded the train in the second half.
Group B is therefore by far the most exciting. Even Inter, previously seriously disappointing, suddenly has the opportunity to advance again.
Liverpool are in the last sixteen
In Group D, Liverpool reached their interim goal as group winners with a 1-0 home win against Ajax Amsterdam. Atalanta Bergamo with Remo Freuler, on the other hand, disappointed with a 1-1 at home against Midtjylland, debutant in the Champions League, previously without points. Ajax are only one point away from Atalanta and have the home advantage in the last match of the group against the Italians.
Atlético must continue to shake for qualification for the round of 16
Long-qualified Bayern Munich competed with Atlético Madrid with some sort of B team. Big names like Manuel Neuer and Robert Lewandowski haven’t even traveled. However, Atlético only achieved a 1-1 draw. Salzburg, who won against Lokomotiv in Moscow, recently played at home against Atlético and would knock them out of 2nd place with a win.
Real Madrid threaten elimination in the group stage
In the Mönchengladbach group, Madrid were disappointed by the 2-0 defeat at Shakhtar Donetsk. If you hear the conclusion – Schachtar beats Real – you can hardly imagine that Schachtar has lost the previous two group matches against Borussia Mönchengladbach with a total of 0:10 goals. In Donetsk’s 22-man squad for the match against Real there were eleven Ukrainians and ten Brazilians, plus an Israeli. That Israeli, Manor Solomon, came on after 74 minutes and scored 2-0 nine minutes later after a counterattack.
Real Madrid have been represented in all knockout stages of the Champions League for 24 years and have won the premier class seven times during that time. Now the remarkable consistency of the royal family could break.
