In fact, the new MacBook Air’s SSD is twice as fast as its predecessor

The new MacBooks actually feature a significantly faster SSD than their predecessors – the doubling of speed that Apple had promised is actually being delivered. However, the predecessor was not at the top of the weight class either.

Apple has actually integrated a significantly faster mass storage device into the new MacBooks with the Apple Silicon-based M1 processor. The SSD of a MacBook Air with 256 GB of storage writes data at a speed of 2190 MB / s, this has been proven by the tests that users have posted in the MacRumors forum. The data was read at 2675 MB / s. This effectively doubled the speed of the SSD.

For comparison: the 2019 MacBook Air could read data from the SSD at 1319MB / s and write data to the SSD at 1007MB / s.

However, the 2019 MacBook Air was also equipped with an SSD which was quite slow by the industry average at the time.

Apple relies on the latest technologies

In a press release that was published after the last keynote, Apple declared doubling the speed of the SSD with the use of an innovative storage controller and the use of the latest flash technologies. The new SSDs are undoubtedly fast, but not yet the absolute best in the world.

However, moving large amounts of data back and forth like videos or image files should be just as fast as the app launch or the startup process should be very fast. The M1 chip itself has also recently impressed testers; in the benchmarks it is faster than all Macs currently available with Intel internals, including the 16-inch 2019 MacBook Air and the 10th Gen Intel Core i9 CPU with 3.6 GHz.
