American researchers from the Jolla Institute for Immunology (California) have just published the most comprehensive study conducted on immunity to Covid-19. They analyzed blood samples from 185 people between the ages of 19 and 81 who had all been ill with mild symptoms. They came to this conclusion: Six months after infection, almost all people still had a strong immune response, and therefore little risk of reinfection.
According to Pr. Arnaud Fontanet, epidemiologist at the Institut Pasteur, “it was feared that for people who had contracted minor forms of this coronavirus, the immune response would be relatively short. But beware, we have little feedback on this disease.“The researchers analyzed three types of immune responses: antibodies, B cells that destroy antibodies, and T cells that destroy infected cells. Even if reinfected, such an immune memory would prevent the development of a severe form of the disease for years.
