Ilune will lead the trial on the treatment of Wolfram syndrome

“The hope is enormous”. The words of Peio Dufau, the father of the young Ilune, 13, in fourth grade at the Piarres Larzabal college in Ciboure. Monday, November 23rd his daughter will participate in a therapeutic trial very promising in Montpellier to fight his illness, Wolfram syndrome.

Wolfram syndrome is a orphan and degenerative disease affecting only about fifty people in France. Important symptoms: diabetes, reduced hearing and vision, etc. So many symptoms that little Ilune suffers from.

The hope of the test

The test that will be carried out in Montpellier is called “Treat Wolfram”. It is part of a European-wide test, of which Ilune will be the first French to participate. “On the one hand, I am stressed because I will have many exams “, admits the student. “And at the same time I am very excited, because it is a step forward, it makes me hope that everything is possible, that I may have a better life and a better view“.

A hope shared by his father, Peio Dufau: “The purpose of the drug, the goal of the researchers is to limit or even block the disease, and this is priceless”. A drug in the form of drops, which Ilune will have to take every day from this first meeting in Montpellier.

For his part, Peio Dufau will continue to mobilize within the “Syndrome de Wolfram” association. In three years they managed to raise 90,000 euros for research.
