According to a new study, astronauts who will live millions of kilometers from Earth must first be “conscientious”, meaning they should be willing to do the right thing and carry out their tasks with care.
In the study it was stated that the above trait is more important than honesty, humility, emotionality, extroversion, openness and compatibility.
Julia McMenamin, author of the study and PhD student in psychology at Western University in Canada, commented on the findings:
“The more conscientious a team is, the better it will be in performing its tasks.”
The researchers, who publish their work in the scientific journal Astrobiology, say these features are “uncomfortable” for long-term space flights.
Currently, NASA aims to launch the first manned mission to Mars in the 2030s. It is estimated that the crew members will spend approximately 5 years together, except for their training on Earth.
Can teamwork make the Mars dream come true? ****
Mike Massimino, the consultant and former NASA astronaut on the Netflix series Away, on the team of astronauts running the first mission to Mars, spoke on CNN in September and made important statements about teamwork.
Maximin, who took part in many space missions during NASA’s Space Shuttle program, which ended in 2011, used the expressions “We really love each other as astronauts.”
Stating that astronauts see themselves as both family and friends, Maximin said: “We are looking for candidates who will make progress in long-term spaceflight” and added:
“If things go wrong, you make mistakes. After all, no one is perfect. But you have to be able to deal with it. You should think about the people who work not only for the crew, but also for the team to return to Earth. crew should contribute to their work. “
Maximin also pointed out that people see astronauts as superheroes, but that’s not true:
But we are just normal people who care for each other and do great things.
