Huawei, especially in its P series, is always committed to presenting the best camera on the market. Now, after a leak, it is believed that we may be facing the next step in mobile photo innovation.

Huawei battles thorny brambles as it innovates in its upcoming presentations. In fact, there are only a few months left until the meeting with the new flagship of the brand, Huawei P50 and P50 Pro.

It is a high-end series in which the Chinese company emphasizes mobile photography, among other aspects such as screen, battery, performance, etc.

So far it is not known which flagship Huawei will carry liquid lenses throughout 2021. The leak speaks of “flagship”, ie in the plural, so it could be a technology that will arrive in February or March 2021 on the Huawei P50 series and an improved version in the Mate series later.

These are just rumors, as until the situation progresses further, no real conclusions can be drawn. It would also be convenient for Huawei to comment on the matter, but this will not happen until the official presentation.

What and how does a liquid lens work?

Liquid lenses are a solution of liquids the manufacturer is able to drive via electrical impulses. In this way, the position of the liquid and, therefore, the optical characteristics of the lens are changed within a few milliseconds.

If you think it’s cutting edge technology, it’s certainly modern, but not quite current. It is a technology developed more than 20 years ago from the hand of the French physicist Bruno Berge.

The Varioptic company has been working on this technology since 2005, and Samsung was about to release a mobile phone with these peculiar lenses at the time, but the project didn’t work.

This company joined Corning from Corning Gorilla Glass in 2017. The liquid lens project was never abandoned and they continued to develop this technology to refine and perfect it.

Liquid lenses have several important aspects, as well as pros and cons. This type of liquid lens accelerates autofocus, taking milliseconds. Another advantage is that it increases the dynamic range, they are lenses that take up very little space (goodbye to the cameras that protrude from the terminal?), they are more resistant to falls, as they do not depend on a motor that moves the lens, it is a cheaper technology than the current one, etc.

Something fundamental in Huawei is the zoom, remember that, together with Samsung, Oppo and Xiaomi, it is one of the few brands with which you can take decent photos with a 50X zoom. With liquid lenses, the zoom range would be greater and it is the terminal itself that, through the passage of electric current through that liquid lens, changes the arrangement of the lens and also of the zoom.

The cons, not yet proven on cell phones, is this the picture quality may be a bit worse than we are used to. It’s a scale that Huawei will have to struggle with to balance its mobile.

Liquid lenses, at least until now, are used in the industrial field, especially in tapes for checking codes, packaging and goods in general. It’s a matter of time to have a mobile phone with liquid lenses in your hands.
