H.Have you ever wondered what challenges the Berlin airport customer has faced in recent years? The customer of that airport in the capital, which was originally supposed to be completed in 2011? In any case, the opening of BER last Saturday was not very festive. Airport boss Engelbert Lütke Daldrup had already announced that “there would be” no “big party”, “just opening”.
Some time ago, the satirical newspaper “Postillon” made a not entirely serious attempt to recreate the obstacles and challenges of recent years. He launched a video game. The “BER Bausimulator” game led the newspaper, which usually identifies “dpo” instead of the German news agency “dpa” as the source of alleged news texts, along with the “Illusive Reflection” development studio for smartphones in May. A more extensive “remastered” version for computers followed in September.
The game places the player in the shoes of the BER construction site manager who – according to the description of the game on the “Steam” sales platform – has to deal with the problems of building locked up airports. In an article about the game, the “Postillon” promises “a lot of frustration” when trying to open the airport on time.
Next level, new flaws
In the beginning, the player has to commission different companies to construct the individual airport buildings. You can choose, for example, the inexpensive nursery “Drei Bären” “and” McWok Asia Imbiss und Großbau GmbH “, which is located in the middle price segment, or the overpriced studio” Domina’s – Bau, du Stück! “The further the construction of individual buildings progresses, the more often the player is faced with new defects that need to be corrected. Four options are always available, costs and chances of success are also displayed.
But with the efficiency of these options, it is such a thing. For the erection of a brand new 5G transmission tower, you can ask for help from the responsible ministry. You can also hire construction workers to pick the letters G from Russian bread. In this particular case, however, these two options only had a five percent chance of success, and working with the ministry cost a lot more. Furthermore, such a low chance of success evokes a whole host of new shortcomings.
To finance the construction work, the player receives a regular budget. You can also earn by completing individual sections of the building. But the foreman must also keep an eye on the opening date of the airport. If it is passed three times, the game is lost. The date can be postponed to 2037, but with the passage of time the costs increase immeasurably, while the problems in the construction do not end. Loans provide liquidity temporarily. The sale of airport shares, for example to Russian oligarchs, Friedrich Merz or Deutsche Bahn, washes the money in the cashier. But sooner or later the problems reach the player again.
The “Postillon” is right at the end: after a round of “BER Building Simulator Remastered”, you don’t want to do a second. It is to be hoped that the real airport of the capital will finally be able to do what the imaginary cannot: put an end to the never ending story of defects and failures by opening it.
