YouTube is probably one of the most popular mobile apps on the planet for any iOS or Android user.
It has always been a free platform, but as a matter of fact it is increasingly plagued with ads and interruptions that cut the experience a bit.
From this point of view, giving in to the paid version becomes more and more attractive. Not to mention one of its most amazing features: the ability to play content in the background.
But not every budget can afford this luxury. So here we show you how to keep playing your YouTube videos even if you close the platform on Android.
It’s not perfect but it’s free
There are a couple of methods in Android that can make it possible to listen to YouTube content in the background while keeping other apps open. Here we show you the most basic ones.
Use the multitasking of the latest Android versions
Android allows you to have multiple windows open in its newer versions. The example shared here corresponds to a Huawei P30 with Google Mobile Services and EMUI 10 based on Android 10. But the process is more or less similar in other layers of the operating system:
- Open an app, like Twitter.
- Then place your finger on the right side of the screen and drag towards the center of the screen until the multi-window apps menu appears:
- Go to the end of the list and look for YouTube, if it’s not in the list tap the plus sign (+) and add it.
- Once inside the list, tap and hold the YouTube icon and drag it to the bottom half of the screen.
- The interface will be split in two, above you will see Twitter and below you can use YouTube in parallel.
Use a mobile browser
- On your Android install a browser such as Chrome or Firefox.
- Open your browser and go to “youtube.com”. Don’t use the Google search engine because it will open the app instead.
- Browse the YouTube website and find the video of your choice.
- Go to the “Settings” menu by tapping the three vertical dots in the upper right corner of the window. Choose the “View Desktop Site” option.
- The mobile interface will change, play the video.
- Tap the Home button to view your smartphone’s home screen. And voila, the video will play in the background.
Download a companion app
There is always the option to download an app like Great pop-up video which will allow you to run a floating window with the contents of any app in the background.
