Hide a computer within a network
As they say, we have the ability to make a computer connected to a network remain hidden from others. This way it would not appear inside devices connected either by Wi-Fi or by cable.
Disable network discovery
A simple option we have in Windows 10 is disable network detection. This way we will make sure that our team is hidden in a network and does not appear to others.
For this we must go to Start, write Control Panel, we give to Networks and Internet, then to Network Centers and Sharing Resources and once we are here we will go to Change the advanced usage settings.
This is where we will find the section of Discovery of the network. If we have it enabled, it means that our team is visible within that network. On the other hand, if we click on Disable Network Detection, we will avoid it.
We just need to check the box and click Save Changes. We just accept these changes.
Note that there are differences between the files different network profiles. We can find the private profile, which would be when we connect to a home network, for example, and also the public or guest profile, which would be if we connect to a coffee shop or any place where there may be multiple users.
The steps we have explained can be performed for each of these profiles. It is interesting that if we link to a file public network, which would then be a guest or a public profile, we have not configured it so that the team is visible. On the other hand, it is possible that we are interested in making it visible in the private profile, although we can change it at any time.
This means that if, for example, we connect to a network at work or in any public place and turn off network detection, once we connect to our home network, we would have to do the same steps to turn it off.
Windows 10 asks if we want to be visible
Surely on some occasion when we connect to a network we have seen a pop-up message that tells us if we want to be visible on that network or not. It’s a Windows 10 generic message and it gives us the opportunity to choose one or the other option.
When this message appears and to hide the equipment, we must give it a chance keep it hidden. This will disable network detection. We will not be able to interact with any other computers on the network, even if network detection is enabled. Neither with printers or any network drives. Of course, we also keep our equipment hidden.
This is something we need to do when we connect to a network that we don’t trust. For example, a public Wi-Fi or any network that we don’t control and therefore want to hide.
Our team is never completely hidden
We mentioned how to make a Windows 10 computer hidden from other devices connected to that network. It is a feature that the operating system itself allows for. However, we must keep in mind that our team is still completely hidden.
Why do we say this? Someone who has access to admin panel of the router You may see that our equipment is connected, via Wi-Fi or cable. You could, for example, see what the MAC address of that device is, whether we are connected via Wi-Fi or cable, etc.
Obviously we must keep in mind that from the administration panel of the router it was not possible to access the files we have on our computer. In this sense we are protected.
In short, it is possible to hide our Windows 10 computer so that it does not appear on other devices connected to that network. However, as we have seen, we will continue to be connected and therefore we could see it from the admin panel of the router.
