A YouTuber uploaded a video to YouTube in which he revealed that he managed to connect (via unofficial means) to Apple’s new Mac M1s in the US 6 external displays, although the M1 Macs can only be officially connected to 1-2 monitors .
According to official specifications revealed by Apple in the US, the new Mac mini, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro computers with M1 chips will only support one to two external displays.
This is in contrast to the Intel processor variants which support not just two external displays. But is the limit of 1-2 external screens really the limit? It does not seem.
According to a video uploaded to YouTube by Ruslan Tulupov, he unofficially managed to connect up to 6 external displays to Apple’s new M1-chip Macs in the US.
To do this, it used DisplayLink adapters to connect all monitors to Apple’s M1 Macs, surpassing the number of officially supported external displays.
In terms of performance, as Apple’s M1 Macs power these monitors at the same time, you can sometimes see a drop in frames on these monitors, but otherwise everything seems to work.
From what is presented in the video, it seems that a huge amount of RAM will be consumed, but it is possible that this is due to the fact that there are many applications and windows open at the same time.
Is this an ideal configuration? Not really, but if you’re used to a dual or triple setup with your Apple Mac, maybe this unofficial way is worth trying. Hopefully, Apple’s M1 chip computers in the US will be able to officially support 6 external displays in the future.
