If you thought 512GB was enough for gaming if you get an Xbox Series S or 1TB shouldn’t bother you on Xbox Series X, you’re wrong.
Just like you can’t store 64GB of data on a 64GB iPhone, Microsoft has failed to tell you in marketing materials for future consoles that the available space will be much smaller than what’s on the box. From a certain point of view, the phenomenon was predictable, but no one expected such a discrepancy.
In theory, the new Xbox Series consoles are expected to reach new buyers starting November 10. However, some stores appear to have made a mistake and delivered the previously ordered units. It didn’t take long for a Reddit user to detail their experience, starting with free space.
If I buy you an Xbox Series S, which comes bundled with a 512GB SSD, you’ll have access to just 364GB for installing video games. Likewise, the X series has a 1TB SSD from which an absolutely shocking value of just 802GB can be used. In other words, we’re talking about 30% of the S series space and 20% of the space of an X series console being sacrificed for the operating system and other console functions.
The values are exaggerated in many ways and, sadly, we are unlikely to have an explanation too soon or never. For reference, if you draw a parallel between the operating system on the console and an installation of Windows 10, both of which were created by Microsoft, you cannot go up to 150 or 200 GB. of space sacrificed.
A Windows 10 can also be installed in 32GB of space. Windows 10 tablets are also sold which only have so much space. If you’re feeling generous, you might understand the 64GB sacrifice for this purpose, but Microsoft may disappoint a lot of fans with these values.
Apparently, in addition to the operating system, much of that sacrificed space is dedicated to the Quick Resume function, which allows you to quickly switch from one game to another. When using Quick Resume, it’s like “hibernating” a game and the entire volume of data is transferred to the SSD.
If you don’t have enough game space, you can purchase an external 1TB Seagate SSD. At $ 220, however, it costs almost as much as the S series console.
