Homematic IP achieves intelligent routing

Homematic IP, the smart home system from manufacturer EQ3, has received a major upgrade. Advanced routing is intended to enable combined operation of the Homematic IP radio and wired devices with the Homematic IP Cloud including the app or, as usual, with the Smart Home CCU3 central unit. In this way, multiple access points can be connected within an installation and used as additional routers. This is how Homematic IP reaches – according to its own statements – in the smart home market unmatched reliability and virtually unlimited radio range.

A wireless access point (HAP) and a wired access point for top hat driving (DRAP), which are connected via the home LAN, are required for combined operation. With the update, users can now use multiple access points with the cloud or CCU3 for the first time. The initial retail version applies to 2 HAPs or 1 HAP + 1 DRAP within a Homematic IP installation, according to the manufacturer. In the next phase it will be possible to integrate up to eight access points.

Advanced routing also creates the conditions to lift the limit on the number of devices in the cloud in the first quarter of 2021. In the future, the number of licensed Homematic IP radios will be defined solely by the number of access points: with the first HAP, 80 devices are licensed radio, with each additional HAP there are 40 devices. When integrating multiple DRAPs, the number of wired devices is determined only by the properties of the IP Homematic wired bus.

There is also a firmware update that supports advanced routing for the recently introduced WLAN access point. Up to 40 devices can be taught to one WLAN access point. In a Homematic-IP network without HAP, 40 devices are supported for the first WLAN access point and 20 for each additional WLAN access point.
