Gabon recorded 500 new HIV-AIDS infections between ages 0-14 in 2019, compared to 1,200 new infections in the same year among adults. Several factors explain this situation, such as a lack of funds to guide the response or counter irresponsible behavior.

According to statistics from the National Plan to Fight AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections (PNLIST), highlighted in The Union from 1is In December, 500 new infections were registered in the age group between 0 and 14 years in 2019.
The situation is equally alarming among adults, where 1,200 new infections were recorded in the same year, including 810 among women, although the prevalence rate dropped from 4.1% in 2006 and 2012 to 3.8%. at the end of 2018. In Gabon, the PNLIST explains that the situation is attributable to the decrease in the level of awareness on prevention and protection measures, the media hype on the subject, funding and irresponsible behavior. In addition to these difficulties, there is the national control strategy that struggles to establish constant monitoring of care for people living with HIV (PLHIV).
On the latter point, an audit is currently underway to perform a grooming of PLWHA. In fact, out of a population of 53,000 PLWHAs, nearly 44,000 know their serological status, while 38,000 are being treated. “However, many duplicates and multiple files sometimes make it difficult to read these statistics correctly”, indicated the Directorate General for AIDS Prevention (DGPS).
