Health insurance: flu vaccination – not free for all | Message

On the official website of the German health insurance it says: “The flu vaccination should prevent the real flu or mitigate it in the course. Against harmless infections such as colds […] the flu shot does not protect. Doctors urgently recommend influenza vaccination for all Corona this year. ”

The flu vaccination must be updated annually

If you want to get vaccinated against true flu, you need to do it again in each flu season, that is, every fall, ideally in the months of September to November. Being vaccinated once as a child doesn’t protect you in this “crown year,” as health insurance companies call it.

Patients who know they have already had an allergic reaction to one or more of the ingredients should obviously not be vaccinated.

There are just over 60 health insurers in this country that cover the cost of flu vaccination for everyone, including the three largest insurers in Germany: Techniker Krankenkasse (TK), Barmer and DAK.

Recommendation of the Standing Committee on Vaccinations

Other statutory health insurance covers the costs for those for whom influenza vaccination is officially recommended by the Standing Commission for Vaccination (STIKO); according to the Federal Center for Health Education, private health insurances usually apply similar rules.

These are:

Persons over the age of 60 and residents in retirement and retirement homes,

Pregnant women from the second trimester (possibly also from the first trimester),

People with underlying ailments such as chronic diseases,

People with regular contact with poultry and wild birds,

People who are exposed to a lot of public traffic for work purposes e

People who care or care for people belonging to risk groups in a professional or private way.

The cash register does not cover the costs – what should be done?

The cost of a flu shot can vary. At Charité, for example, they amount to 23 euros – if a health insurance company does not offer to cover the costs for some people, it may be worth asking for cost coverage.

With some health insurers, patients may first have to pay the costs themselves and then be reimbursed in full or at least in part.
