An American spent 64 days in hospital, mainly for artificial ventilation, after contracting the coronavirus during a trip to Italy last February. While in the hospital, he lost his phalanges on eight fingers due to a disturbance in his blood flow.
A 53-year-old man managed to recover from Covid-19 but lost eight finger phalanges during his hospitalization, People’s website reported on Nov.11.
As reported by the media, the man contracted the virus last February during a trip to Italy, where he went skiing with friends.
He did not feel well during the trip and on his return home to Los Angeles he complained of symptoms to a doctor. The latter managed to convince local authorities to assign the patient one of the few tests available at the time of the coronavirus, which then proved positive. The American was hospitalized with respiratory failure and lung pain.
“I can’t breathe. Gurgling in my lungs. I feel like I’m dead,” he told a friend.
According to the source, the man was given artificial respiration two days later. He started having complications such as a sharp drop in blood pressure, the onset of sepsis, organ failure, and a staph infection.
Serious consequences
In early April, the man, who had lost 22 kilograms, was transferred to a normal intensive care room. A disruption in blood flow caused the blackening of three toes and the upper phalanges of eight of her fingers which had to be amputated.
The American was able to leave the hospital 64 days after his admission, while doctors estimated his chances of survival at 1%.
People’s website claims that he later underwent seven operations to restore the affected extremities.
