Huawei is known to be working on its own operating system – HarmonyOS, the company that already confirms that new phones in 2021 will run it from launch (details here). Additionally, Mate 40 series phones with Kirin 9000 CPUs will be the first to benefit after a software update.
It is expected that 90% of Huawei / Honor phones will adopt the new operating system. Apparently, HarmonyOS in developer beta is ready and will arrive in December. So, I know the date of 18 December circulates for Hongmeng OS 2.0 (the name by which it is known in the Chinese market), which will arrive for the first time in the beta for developers. At the same time, Harmony OS is planned in a global open-beta version, for all users who want to try it, in January or February next year. The stable version that will arrive after an OTA update for all supported phones is expected to appear a few months away.
HarmonyOS OS should arrive first on:
- Mate 40 / Mate 40 Pro series
- Mate 30 / Mate 30 Pro series
- Mate 20 / Mate 20 Pro series
- Huawei P30 / P30 Pro
- Huawei P40 / P40 Pro / P40 Pro Plus
- Honor-20/20 Pro / View 20
- Honor View 30/30 Pro
EMUI 11: The latest Android based operating system
There were leaks that Huawei was working on their own operating system before they were subject to new US restrictions. But now it is clear the Chinese want to replace EMUI 11 with the new HarmonyOS. A new report from MyDrivers cites an interview with Wang Chenglu, head of software development at Huawei Consumer Business Group. The interview focused on how the company intends to replace EMUI with HarmonyOS. Chenglu said EMUI 11 already uses the same framework as HongMeng OS. Also, they have the same system programmer and other similar elements.
From what has been said, we can understand this the latest version of EMUI based on Android 11 is specially designed as a transition version, preparing devices for adoption of the first public version of HarmonyOS. At the moment, the new firmware is ready and expected for several devices in the company’s portfolio: tablets, TVs and watches. Huawei has already created one of the best ecosystems on the market, the new dedicated system would help integrate it even better. It’s interesting to see some diversity in the world of operating systems, currently dominated by iOS and Android. It remains to be seen what the Chinese company will do, but also how open people will be to make the move to something new.
