Goodbye free storage – Google Photos is paid
Anyone who has taken a lot of photos with their smartphones has found a free cloud storage facility in Google Photos that has saved an unlimited number of high-quality images and videos. But it will end in the summer of 2021.

Newly uploaded photos and videos are credited to the Google One storage or 15 gigabyte storage that all Google Account users get for free. All data from the Gmail account and Google Drive also ends up on this memory.
This is how much Google Photos will cost
If your storage is running out, you can reserve some with Google One in the future. For CHF 2 per month or CHF 20 per year there is 100 gigabytes of storage space. For CHF 3 per month or CHF 30 per year, 200 GB. 2 terabytes cost CHF 10 per month (or CHF 100 per year). The space can be shared with the family.
The storage limit applies to all photos and videos uploaded after June 1, 2021. Files that were previously in Google Photos don’t count.
With the Google Photos app, you can sync photos between multiple devices, create albums and share them with other people.
Free for pixel users
If you’re using a Google pixel smartphone, you also have an advantage: photos and videos uploaded in high quality from a pixel device are excluded from the new storage limit.
Previously, Google Photos users could upload an unlimited number of high-quality images and videos. High quality means photos with up to 16 megapixels and videos in 1080p (full HD). Anyone who wanted to upload data in original camera quality received 15 gigabytes of storage for free and could increase it up to 30 terabytes for a fee.
It was to be expected that Google Photos wouldn’t stay free forever. The subscription model allows Google to become more independent of advertising activity.
The photos are not used for advertising purposes
According to Google manager David Lieb, this is a necessary step for Google Photos to “serve” users “in the long term”. “To ensure this, we have decided to adjust the cost of providing the service (…)”, writes Lieb on Twitter.
