Google Photos has announced a new update regarding the storage policy. Unlimited and free uploads of photos and videos will cease to exist in 2021.
In 2015, the launch date of the Google Photos service, the company made a commitment to upload unlimited and free photos and videos. “When we say a lifetime of memories, that’s what we want. With Google Photos, you can now store unlimited high-quality photos and videos for free, ”said Google on the day of the product’s launch, remembers BBC News.
The storage policy was changed last Wednesday and users received a statement in their mailbox. Google Photos anticipates that, starting from June 1, 2021, the free storage of photos and videos is limited to the 15 GB made available by the Google account, in the same way as other services, such as in the case of Gmail and Google Drive. The change will involve, for example, a more controlled management between the space of emails and photos so that the user does not exceed the storage limit.
According to the Google Photos team, since its launch five years ago, the service has evolved a lot, “it’s no longer a simple app to manage your photos. It has become a place that is accessed when we miss someone or a moment and want to review those memories, ”he explains. It also reveals that Google currently stores more than four billion photos and videos, with 28 billion articles submitted every week.
