Google Maps: The new Street View feature is being launched

[ad_1]

Google is rolling out a new feature for Street View. With it, users can contribute road views for Google Maps with their smartphone. The data collected plays an important role in Google’s AR strategy.

Most Street View views are captured by special Google vehicles and mounted 360 degree cameras. There will soon be an easy way to contribute personally. Instead of a Google vehicle or a 360-degree camera, all you need is a smartphone.

Street View app users can record a video while walking down a street with a new feature. The recording is analyzed by Google’s ARCore interface and processed into individual images.

Users collect data for maps …

Once the material is published, the images are automatically rotated and placed in the right place in Google Maps so that other users can find them. Faces and license plates are made unrecognizable by an algorithm.

In areas that Google has already acquired, official Street View views take priority and are marked with a blue line. Dashed blue lines indicate Street View material from individuals.

The Street View feature is currently being rolled out on a trial basis on ARCore compatible Android smartphones in Toronto, New York, Austin, as well as Nigeria, Indonesia and Costa Rica. More regions will be activated soon.

… and Google’s cloud AR

Engaging smartphone users should help complete and update Google Maps in inaccessible, remote and rapidly changing areas.

The AR-Navigation Live View, the one that will particularly benefit from the work of volunteers enables precise 3D localization of smartphone users using Street View displays. Based on this location, Google Maps can display AR elements in the camera window that guide users safely and quickly to their destination. Thanks to the new Street View feature, Live View may also be available in more remote areas.

Location technology is likely to become an important foundation of Google’s AR cloud. This 3D copy of the world may someday be able to accurately link digital information with physical locations, which will enable advanced AR applications for smartphones and AR glasses.
