The dark mode of Windows 10, and do Google Chrome, offer users a mode that makes it more comfortable for users’ eyes, especially when using devices in slightly less light environments.
While Google Chrome’s dark mode works well and respects Windows 10’s theme preferences, it only changes the color of the browser’s top-level user interfaces. For this reason, Google is working on a new update for your browser, both for the Windows 10 As for the Mac OS, which will add the dark theme across the browser.
The update will apply a dark theme to more elements, including scroll bars. Previously, scroll bars have remained lighter than the rest of the browser, even if a page respects dark mode. The next “FormControlsDarkMode” function allows web pages to specify whether scroll bars should follow the system theme.
In a new commit, Google says it is updating WebUI with full support for dark mode. The feature is already active in Chrome Canary and you can test it by adding the following code to the command line:
- -Enable-features = WebUIDarkMode, CSSColorSchemeUARendering
- –Force-dark-mode
Google is also updating all pages of the internal browser with support for dark mode on the scroll bar. This includes settings, bookmarks, a history page, a new tab page, and a PDF print screen.
Google Chrome will have an improved dark mode
Unfortunately, YouTube won’t have a dark scrollbar yet, but Chrome engineers are already in contact with the YouTube team to fix Dark Mode on Windows 10.
As mentioned in the beginning, Microsoft is also helping Google improve dark mode for Chrome. For example, the company fixed an issue where scrollbars on the page kept the old color scheme, even when the Windows 10 theme preference was changed.
The new design is expected to reach all users with the launch of Chrome 88, which will be launched next year. Google also appears to be working on another update that will apply a dark theme to search results when the browser is in dark mode. Additionally, Google Chrome is expected to receive new scrolling enhancements next year, as part of a new project developed by Microsoft.
