A Google announced yesterday that the RCS is now finally available all over the world and for the vast majority of smartphones Android. However, there are four regions that do not have the right to have access to the more secure successor of SMS, which are countries like China, Russia, Cuba and Iran.
For the uninitiated, RCS is an evolution of SMS, but with more features similar to iMessage, WhatsApp and others. Among the features available are delivery receipts, sending good quality images and videos, group conversations with better management, the ability to chat from a Wi-Fi connection, and much more. The experience is similar to that of other messengers, so you shouldn’t have a problem adjusting.
However, there is still a notable absence in Google’s RCS for now, which is end-to-end conversation encryption. At present, an operator, a government, a hacker, Google, or others can technically read RCS. This will soon become part of the story too, as Google says it is testing the same end-to-end encryption.
RCS is now available to the vast majority of users
It will be available later this month in the beta version of the Messages app on Android. Group conversations will not initially be affected. Google adds that end-to-end encryption for RCS will be available to everyone at some point in the year 2021.
