Google updates its Chrome browser to version 87 and promises far-reaching improvements for the latest update in 2020, which should make Internet browsing even faster and more intuitive. A reduced CPU load should also result in lower power consumption and significantly longer runtimes.

More than an extra hour of battery life

Google Chrome is expected to become more efficient with the update to version 87, according to Google’s promise of up to five times lower CPU usage and an hour longer battery life, according to the manufacturer’s internal benchmarks.

This has been achieved through numerous under-the-surface improvements, which Google calls “under-the-hood improvements” and wants its browser to be improved on numerous other levels.

For the latest update in 2020, Google promises: “Faster startup, faster charging and much longer battery life.” The company would like to have achieved the following improvements and optimizations with version 87:

  • Chrome now prioritizes your active tabs over anything open, reducing CPU usage by up to 5x and extending battery life up to 1.25 hours (based on our internal benchmarks).
  • Chrome now starts up to 25% faster, loads pages up to 7% faster, and does all of this using less power and RAM than before.
  • Chrome on Android now loads pages almost instantly when you browse back and forth, making these common tasks super fast.

In addition to an improved JavaScript engine, such as the one offered by Mozilla Firefox 83.0, Google would like to make the browser faster and more efficient with the help of occlusion tracking. However, Google talks about a gradual rollout between version 87 and v88.

Actions directly from the search bar

With a new feature or set of actions, consisting of various actions that can be performed directly via the search bar, Google would like to make Chrome’s operation and configuration even more intuitive.

With the new so-called “Chrome actions”, options and settings can not only be found via the search bar, but also performed directly. For example, you can clear your browser history by entering “clear history” and start the built-in password manager with the “change password” command.

Also, tabs should now be even better organized, grouped, pinned, shared and searched. As usual, the developers have summarized more information in the official release notes for Google Chrome 87.

Chrome 87 is now being rolled out in waves and can already be downloaded as beta v87.0.4280.66 directly under this message from the ComputerBase download repository.
