At the age of 63, professional golfer Bernhard Langer set a Masters record: After a brilliant 68 at the start of the par 72 course, Langer crossed the line with a 73 in the second round as the oldest player in the history of the Masters. “There have been so many great players here before me, from Jack Nicklaus to Gary Player to all the other greats who have competed here. It’s definitely a success to be the oldest to get to the cut,” Langer said.
American Tommy Aaron had set the previous age record as a participant in the second half of the tournament in 2000 (63 years, one month and 16 days). Two-time Masters Champion Langer has an extra month and day.
“What color is the jacket I get?” Langer tweeted to the organizers of the Augusta National Golf Club. Normally, only the traditional main tournament winner gets the coveted green jacket. Langer, who dominated the US Seniors Tour for over a decade, received the famous garment as Masters Champion in 1985 and 1993 and is therefore always eligible to play on the par 72 Magnolia Lane course.
First of all, the oldest of all 92 pros played his experience brilliantly on the Friday following the cancellation due to the waning darkness the day before.
With two bogeys, but six little birds, Langer came within easy reach of the top of the clubhouse. He last scored a 68 at the start in Augusta in 1993, on the way to his second Masters success after his first win in 1985. After a break of just one hour, Langer started round two, which concluded with a hit above the standard. With five bogeys and only four birds, he has slipped a bit in the rankings.
However, his great wish came true. “Making the cut would be a huge success at my age,” Langer said before the tournament. But the tournament is not a fountain of youth for him. “In fact, I feel older when I play guys and see how far they hit and how short they hit,” he said.
