GE launches blockchain-based “Wellness Trace” app to protect airport visitors from COVID-19

General Electric Co. and Albany International Airport today announced the launch of the first blockchain-based airport-focused technology to make air travel safer in the post-COVID-19 pandemic world by monitoring cleanliness in public areas as well as passengers and employees selection.

The app will also offer the ability to rate nearby amenities, restaurants, hotels and other attractions based on pandemic safety for travelers using information from the community.

GE’s Aviation Division launched a distributed ledger blockchain app called the Wellness Trace App, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play, which the airport used to monitor COVID-19 cleanup protocols.

Albany Airport is GE’s first customer and will become the test bed for the Wellness Trace app’s blockchain-based platform and its machine learning protocols.

The app’s goal is to provide safe travel for the public and build a community like Waze, TripAdvisor and Yelp. The app will also offer the public the unique ability to provide real-time feedback on the cleanliness of their homes. For example, if a traveler needs to take a break at a refreshment area or grab a bite to eat near the airport, they can check the Wellness Trace for the cleanest restaurants nearby, and the Wellness Trace will offer the cleanest and evaluating them based on will most likely follow COVID-19 protocols.

Albany Airport has started a three-month trial, during which operations staff will use Wellness Trace to monitor cleaning and hygiene protocols for key areas and objects around the airport. Using the Wellness Trace App from mobile or tablet, the operating staff can validate the cleaning of objects by scanning each QR bar code.
