Takaaki Nakagami and Cal Crutchlow spent three seasons with teammates LCR Honda and the Englishman ended his MotoGP career at Portimao. The Japanese says he learned a lot from him.
Cal Crutchlow is pure entertainment, only a few racing drivers knock you out like the current 35 year old. Some call Cal a talker, perhaps. But he’s honest, to the point, blatantly – traits that I fear are going extinct. “Cal doesn’t lie, understand or exaggerate enormously,” a British colleague once told me.
Apart from that, he is a very good racing driver. Not the most talented, but a fighter before the Lord. He could ignore the pain and train until he fell on the racing bike.
I have closely followed Crutchlow’s career ever since he first competed in the Supersport World Championship in 2005. Already then he proved that he not only has a wide mouth, but is above all a determined and hard worker.
This is exactly what brought him to the premier class of MotoGP after two years in the 2012 World Superbike Championship, where he rode for Yamaha, Ducati and Honda. For the past six years Crutchlow has been under contract with Lucio Cecchinello’s LCR team, and since 2018 he has as teammate the Japanese Takaaki Nakagami, who stole the show this year.
While Crutchlow could only collect 32 points due to injury and WM-18. the Japanese scored 116 points and finished tenth overall.
“I’ve learned a lot from him over the past three years, he’s been kind,” Nakagami Crutchlow said in homage. «Especially in my first year in MotoGP, he gave me some tips on how to ride the Honda. At that time he already had a lot of experience with Yamaha, Ducati and Honda. In the first year it was impossible for me to fight it.
