Fritzbox 5530: AVM fiber optic router with Wi-Fi 6 and multi-gigabit LAN

[ad_1]

A good year after the announcement, AVM launches the Fritzbox 5530 on the market. Like the two Fritz boxes 5490 and 5491, it is designed to operate over a fiber optic connection (fiber to the home, FTTH, fiber to the apartment. ), but achieves higher transmission speeds than its predecessors.

The Fritzbox 5530 is equipped with Wi-Fi 6 (WLAN 802.11ax), which transmits up to 2.4 Gbit / s in the 5 GHz network with an extra wide 160 MHz radio channel and compatible clients (2.4 GHz: 600 MBit / s). The router also supports NBase-T with 2.5 GBit / s on a LAN port. According to AVM, the Broadband Forum consortium has certified the Fritzbox 5530 for XGS-PON (Passive Optical Network up to 10 GBit / s).

In Germany, AVM includes Fritzbox 5530 SFP (Small Form-Factor Pluggable) modules for 1 GBit / s in active (Active Optical Network, AON) and passive networks. For individual other EU countries, the manufacturer supplies SFP + modules suitable for 10 Gbit / s – in Germany, however, the technology is not widely used. Network operators in this country could bring corresponding versions if needed; alternatively, the SFP module can be replaced by the user.

The conclusion is that, according to AVM, the Fritzbox with AON and Gigabit-PON should cover “all common fiber optic connections in Europe”.

In addition to the LAN connection with 2.5 GBit / s, two Ethernet ports with 1 GBit / s are available. AVM does not use USB in the Fritzbox 5530 – memory and printers, for example, cannot be connected. Wireless Enhanced Digital Telecommunications (DECT) for telephony and smart home functions are on board; As an alternative to IP telephony, an analog device can be connected.

The FritzOS operating system offers common comfort functions, including IP-TV, VPN, a smart home control surface, MyFritz internal DynDNS function, child protection and WLAN guest access. Additional devices can be paired to create a mesh WLAN.

AVM wants to start selling the Fritzbox 5530 shortly for the recommended 170 euros through resellers. In addition, “city network operators and many regional and national suppliers” will offer the router along with their fiber optic tariffs.
