The creators of the online video game Fortnite, Fortnite, recently launched a merchandise store for which they decided to accept cryptocurrency along with other conventional payment methods. Surprisingly, the company has listed the Monero cryptocurrency as an acceptable payment method, abandoning the popular Bitcoin for its privacy.
The Merchandise Store, which is called Retail Row, allows millions of fans of the game to buy the various things related to Fortnite and its various seasons. The store has listed all major credit cards, Google pay, PayPal and Monero cryptocurrency as acceptable methods for payment. All payments made by the cryptocurrency will be processed by the GloBee service, which allows retailers to accept various cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, XMR, etc.
The company's decision to accept Monero as a preferred cryptographic method has many languages shaking, with the majority expressing surprise at the decision. Some turned to social media to express their opinion and expressed concerns about the decision. In response to the various questions published on social media, the main maintainer of Monero, Riccardo Spagni revealed that to pay with XMR, users must go through the regular payment procedure. When asked what might be the reason behind Retail Row's decision not to accept Bitcoin, Spagni claimed that the lack of privacy in the case of Bitcoin could have been the possible reason for the decision. Epic Games seems to be interested in the level 2 solution of downsizing due to the increased privacy associated with it.
Despite this development, it is important to note that the Bitcoin Lightning network has grown enormously in the last year. In November 2018, the network reached a capacity of 180 BTC which has recently exceeded 500 BTC by the end of the year.
For many, it seems a little strange to accept credit cards and not Bitcoin because of the privacy reason. Spouses in a tweet noted that Fortnite's concern is to provide users with options that preserve their privacy and that Fortnite is not pursuing the most resilient proof of payment option.
In the last round of financing, Epic Games has been valued over $ 15 billion. The reason behind the increased concern for privacy is due to many factors. First, the Cryptoblock has previously explained that hackers have hidden malware in popular games for stealing users' bitcoins. In order to spread the malware, users have been enticed with the promise of free gifts like wallhack, free passes for the season, aimbot, etc. According to a report on Holiday 2018 Consumer, many of the teenagers in the United States have revealed that they would like to have cryptocurrencies and the Fortnite game currency called V-Bucks as a free gift. Thus, the concern for user privacy is something that Fortnite has priority over others.
As far as XMR is concerned, it is a rather controversial cryptocurrency and it was very prominent when AlphaBay, now a defunct online darknet market, started to accept it as a payment method. XMR has a high score on privacy and thanks to its easy mining process; Reports now suggest that cybercriminals are using mining malware to extract the XMR.
