In the city derby, Hertha BSC finished behind and won 3: 1 (0: 1) against Union Berlin. Taiwo Awoniyi gave the Union the lead at the Olympic Stadium (20th minute), Peter Pekarik equalized for Hertha (51st). Substitute Krzysztof Piatek decided the match with a brace (74th / 77th). In the 23rd minute the Union was outnumbered, Robert Andrich had kicked Lucas Tousart in the head.
After a first phase without light shots, Union used the first shot on goal to take the lead: Marcus Ingvartsen had moved on to Awoniyi. He didn’t hit the ball correctly, but he still passed Alexander Schwolow in the far corner (20th).
The enthusiasm of the first goal did not last long for Urs Fischer’s side. In a duel with Lucas Tousart, the unions Robert Andrich tore his leg too high and hit the Frenchman with his foot on the head. As a result, referee Felix Brych put Andrich off the pitch (23 minutes).
The game almost never changed due to the Unioner’s numerical superiority. Hertha BSC have not yet been able to reach deals, the home team had a particularly difficult time out of the game. Even Hertha’s best chance, a header from Dodi Lukébakio from a corner kick, ultimately did not pose a problem for Union goalkeeper Andreas Luthe (40th).
After the break, Hertha came to equalize. Decisive for this was only one action by Matheus Cunha: the Brazilian created the space for a mid-range arrival, Luthe rejected the ball on one side. The advanced Pekarik met as a stabber (51.).
As a result, the Union was barely enough for its own rescue attacks. Marker Awoniyi went off the pitch, with Sebastian Griesbeck further protection coming to close the center and keep the opponent away from goal (54th). However, this only succeeded to a limited extent: after a play error by Luthe, Hertha quickly took the lead, a deflected shot from substitute Piatek turned the game around (74th).
Shortly after, Piatek scored his second volley and ultimately decided the match (77th). The last minute of recovery reserved a final setback for the Union: Max Kruse was injured without any opponent’s influence and limped off the pitch. A series of eight matches ended without defeat for the Union. Hertha achieved their first home win of the season and are 11th ahead of weekend games, while the Union are temporarily sixth in the standings.
