Purpose of the study

  • Multivitamins: Their ingredients contain antioxidant properties and studies have shown that they can reduce the risk of developing a respiratory infection
  • Omega-3 fatty acids – play a role in T and B lymphocyte function and are anti-inflammatory.
  • Probiotics can alter the gut microbiota and can generate antiviral metabolites that strengthen the host’s immune system.
  • Zinc, Vitamin C, and Garlic – Studies have shown that they can play a role in symptom reduction, but similar results were not shown in this study.

This study revealed a significant protective effect of probiotics, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin or D supplementation against SARS infection. The team wrote: “No obvious benefits were observed for men, nor any effects of vitamin C, garlic or zinc for men or women.”
