The downed Wallabies have embarked on an intense new match-review process, looking for “gold nuggets” as they try to recover from the Tri Nations’ disappointing 15-15 draw with Argentina.
Wallabies assistant manager Scott Wisemantel said the team were as “flat” as he’d seen them after missing a 15-6 lead against the Pumas in Saturday’s clash in Newcastle.
A win would get them within 80 minutes of lifting the tournament silverware, and the Wallabies knew they had missed a golden opportunity.
“They (Argentina) were dead, 20 minutes from the end, they were gone, but we opened the door,” Wisemantel said on Tuesday.
“We were tactically a little naive, lacking in discipline – so that’s what managed to escape.”

Ahead of the last game against Argentina on December 5 at Bankwest Stadium Wisemantel, manager Dave Rennie wanted to try something new.
“We split the game into four 20-minute quarters and across the team, they were split into four groups and each got a part,” he explained.
“They then had to review what was good and what was poor and how we can handle it – it was a long process but in the end I think we ended up with tactical growth which is what we want.
“In those smaller groups everyone has a voice and from that you get little gold nuggets.”

While the last 20 minutes were obviously the most disappointing, the main areas identified were decision making, discipline and the inability to convert opportunities.
“We have created a lot of opportunities but we have to be better at finishing, so this is around our skill level, and we need to improve in decision making,” he said.
“Discipline is definitely an area where we need to tense up, react to problems; we need to be calm, collected, composed and tactically intelligent.”
Meanwhile, Wisemantel said they were confident injured playmaker James O’Connor, who has missed the last three games, could be available for the final match.
He said O’Connor was doing some rehab by running on his injured foot that came after a knee problem.
