The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has approved the allocation of quota seats for the women’s and men’s World Cups, which will take place in 2022 and 2023 respectively.

The approval was given at a meeting of the board of directors, chaired by the president of FIH Narinder Batra.

The Executive Committee confirmed that Europe will have six representatives at the 2022 Women’s World Cup, with co-organizers from Spain and the Netherlands already confirmed.

The last four places will be determined at the 2021 EuroHockey Championship.

Asia will boast four representatives and the Pan-American region three, with the 2021 Asian Cup and the 2022 Pan-American Cup in Chile determining the qualifiers.

The 2021 Oceania Cup will qualify two nations, while next year’s Africa Cup will determine the continent’s only qualification.

The FIH also approved the match schedule for the 2022 Women’s World Cup tournament.

The hosts of India are assured of a place in the 2023 Men’s World Cup, where they will be joined by three qualifiers of the 2021 Asian Cup.

Seven teams will qualify for next year’s EuroHockey Championship in the Netherlands, while two countries will qualify for the Oceania Cup and Pan-American Cup in 2021 and 2022 respectively.

One team will qualify for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

The FIH had been forced to increase the number of World Cup seats available through the continental championships from six to 11.

Traditionally, only the winner of each Continental Championship has received an automatic seat for the World Cup.

The now defunct Hockey World League had previously offered 11 and 10 seats for the men’s and women’s tournaments respectively.

The playoffs were originally expected to determine qualifiers, but seats will all be determined based on the continental leagues.

The FIH also approved the match schedule for the 2021 FIH Women’s Junior World Cup in South Africa, as well as amendments to the FIH Statute regarding gender-neutral terms.

These statute changes will be submitted for approval at the FIH Congress in May 2021.
