National footballer Joshua Kimmich will be absent from Bayern Munich at least until the end of the year after suffering a knee injury in the Bundesliga’s top match against Borussia Dortmund. The 25-year-old midfielder underwent surgery on the lateral meniscus of his right knee on Sunday evening. The German record champion’s medical department assumes that Kimmich will be available again in January, the club announced.

Bayern reacted relieved that Kimmich’s injury is not as serious as feared. “We are happy that Joshua will probably be back for us in a few weeks,” sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said in the message. Kimmich was injured in a duel with BVB pro Erling Haaland in Dortmund in the 36th minute in Monaco’s 3-2 draw on Saturday night.

Kimmich’s failure also affects the plans of national team coach Joachim Löw: Löw has named Wolfsburg right-back for the first time for the next international matches against the Czech Republic (11 November) and in the Nations League against Ukraine (14 November) and Spain (November 17) Ridle Baku later. In addition to Kimmich, who is mainly used in central midfield but can also play on the right in the defensive chain, regular full-backs Lukas Klostermann and Thilo Kehrer are also missing from the DFB lineup through injury.
