Brazilian Superbike rider Matheus Barbosa died after an accident at the Interlagos circuit at the age of 23.
The Interlagos circuit on the outskirts of São Paulo is widely known to European racing fans as the venue for Formula 1 racing – Sunday was the scene of a tragic accident in the Brazilian Superbike series. Kawasaki rider Matheus Barbosa had a fatal accident, he was only 23 years old.
The tragedy occurred in the area approaching the Juncao curve (curve 13). Barbosa lost control there, went off the track and slipped with the bike on a strip of green in the escape zone. There, however, he could no longer brake and crashed into a metal structure.
What at first didn’t seem particularly worrying ended up being fatal. Barbosa was thrown into an iron bar near the runway on impact. The first responders arrived immediately at the scene of the accident, but were no longer able to save the young Brazilian, who according to the authorities would have died instantly.
Barbosa, fourth at the time of the accident, was a very religious person and wore the emblem of Jesus on the side of his helmet. Interlagos was the fifth stage of the “SBK Pro” class calendar. This is the series where Anthony West tried in vain to escape his doping ban. The race was stopped immediately.
It is still unclear how the rider could lose control of his blue and white Kawasaki ZX-10R in the left turn. The police now want to clarify the course of the incident. Barbosa was Brazilian Supersport Champion in 2019.
