Ortiz was hospitalized since last Friday (November 6), at the Colombia Clinic in Bogotá, where he arrived after suffering a heart attack while recording a new program on a renowned regional channel in Tabio, Cundinamarca. He entered the ICU with a confidential prognosis and was tested for Covid-19, which tested negative.

However, last Thursday morning his situation began to worsen with severe respiratory problems, until he died that night of the same day, although the news was released yesterday morning.

He was born in Bogotá in 1947. He was seduced by acting when his father, instead of taking him to a football match, took him to see a show at the Teatro Colón. At 17 he was already doing a seminar at the La Mama Theater in Bogotá with Kepa Amuchástegui.

The show “La galera” was his professional stage debut and was followed by productions such as “Guadalupe años sin – Cuenta”, a classic of Colombian theater, and the theatrical adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s opera “L ‘ incredible and sad story of Cándida Eréndira and her soulless grandmother ‘, as well as that comedy that revolves around the events of the taking of the courthouse 35 years ago,’ La siempreviva ‘, among many others.

With more than 40 years dedicated to acting, Ortiz began acting with theater companies in the 70s, at a time when the acting commitment was linked to political activity: he participated in productions of the La Candelaria Theater, the Free Theater from Bogotá and worked as an acting teacher for the Higher Academy of Bogotá.

In Colombia’s cinematic history, he is remembered for his extraordinary participation in the film ‘La siempreviva’ and for his role in the adaptation of Santiago Gamboa’s novel ‘Losing is a question of method’, directed by Sergio Cabrera and in film appearances such as “The mayor of Oedipus”, “The shot at the stadium”, “La vorágine”, among others.

However, the new generations recognize him for his performances in soap operas such as ‘La Hija del Mariachi’, ‘Chepe Fortuna’, ‘Pobre Pablo’, ‘Las detectivas y el Víctor’ and ‘Los Reyes’, among others, for those who grew up In the nineties you may remember him for being part of the series “From head to toe”.

He never stopped preparing, with dramatic art workshops in New York, Rome and Mexico and studied with teachers such as Peter Brook, Darío Cook and Eugenio Barba. He became a master of acting, working in both Mexico and Colombia at the National School of Dramatic Art and the National University. And in 1992, upon returning from Mexico, where he lived for eight years, he founded the Caja de Tools theater school, where he trained actors such as Flora Martínez, Miguel Varoni, Alejandro Aguilar, Angie Cepeda, Marcela Mar, Carolina Acevedo, Chichila Navia and Santiago Alarcón. .

One of his last screen appearances was a brief but thrilling role in the Netflix series, “Theft of the century,” based on the multi-million dollar heist of Banco de la República de Valledupar in the 1990s. In it he played a kidney patient, a partner of “Molina”, personalized by Christian Tappan.
