For some years it has been the location of choice for the debut of the new high-end Qualcomm Snapdragon platforms that will be adopted in the coming months by all the partners that produce smartphones with the Android operating system. The events of this atypical 2020 have forced Qualcomm to give up its usual location in Maui, Hawaii, and opt for an exclusively online solution.
The beginning of December was, as usual, with the Qualcomm Snapdragon Technology Summit, an event in which the American company lays the foundations of all that will be its technological development in the sector of devices and solutions for mobile telecommunications for the following year.
COVID 19 will also have repercussions in the first months of 2021, which Mobile World Congress Barcelona will not be held as usual at the end of February, but at the end of June. MWC, therefore, will not be the home of the many new FlagShip smartphones that will be based on Qualcomm’s next-generation SoC.
Snapdragon 888 is the number of the beast
At the first opening conference of the Tech Summit, Qualcomm anticipated the name of its new high-end SoC, called Snapdragon 888and provided only some of the basic technical details. Qualcomm will today provide all the architectural and technical details of this new product that will become the heart of the high-end Android smartphones that will arrive throughout 2021.
The Snapdragon 888 integrates Qualcomm 5G third generation modem: let’s talk about the solution Snapdragon X60 5G, able to offer compatibility with mmWave and sub-6 transmission technologies adopted by the main world operators. Not only that: this modem integrates support for 5G operator aggregation, support for global, autonomous and non-autonomous multi-SIM modes, as well as dynamic spectrum sharing.

The hexagon is the brain
O Hexagon chipset integrated into the Snapdragon 888 SoC, it controls the Qualcomm sixth generation artificial intelligence engine and reaches a processing power of up to 26b operations per second (TOP). The second generation of Qualcomm Sensing Hub is also integrated, able to guarantee low consumption for processing activities related to artificial intelligence.
A step forward was also taken in the execution of Adreno GPU integrated, the result of the high-end SoC of the previous generation (Qualcomm Snapdragon 865) allowed to obtain frames up to 144 per second. Snapdragon 888 increases the processing power associated with the images taken by the cameras integrated in smartphones: thanks to the Chipset Qualcomm Spectra ISP it can capture images and videos up to a peak of 2.7 gigapixels per second, which corresponds to approximately 120 images with a resolution of 12 MP each captured per second.
At the opening conference of the Tech Summit Cristiano Amon, president, Qualcomm Incorporated, drew attention to the importance of technological development, especially with reference to 5G connectivity.
“Creating premium experiences requires a continuous focus on innovation, as well as a long-term commitment, even in the face of situations of great uncertainty”, Amon said.
“For a company, it needs to focus on tomorrow to continue offering technologies that can redefine premium experiences.”
Today’s work, for Qualcomm, is focused on Chipsets able to offer the different types of mobile devices available on the market an excellent balance between performance, autonomy and flexibility of use in all conditions of use.
