The online auction and eBat sales site will take action against scammers who are selling photos for PlayStation 5 instead of the console, and is removing all fraudulent offers from their lists for now.
Speaking to Eurogamer, a representative of the site condemned “opportunistic sellers trying to deceive other users,” adding that the site is removing all fraudulent listings and will take “appropriate action” against the sellers.
The scheme involves creating a list that looks like a legitimate PlayStation 5 sale, but doesn’t go through a printed photograph of the console. The key to the scam is the use of titles such as “Sony PlayStation 5 Digital Edition 1TB Console – White (PHOTO)” and subtle, masked warnings in the body of the ad that the sale is a photograph, in order to mislead more carelessly.
At the time of this writing, there are dozens of such listings on the American and British eBay website, with bids reaching several hundred dollars. It is possible that many of these values are inflated by the scammers themselves, in order to make the scheme more legitimate.
EBay advises caution with any purchase, with a special emphasis on high-value or high-demand items, such as the PlayStation 5.
Sellers take advantage of the website’s rules not to commit an illegal act, at least in the technical sense of the term. Although legal, these listings are ethically reprehensible and eBay now seems determined to get the house in order.
For now, the stocks of the console are practically sold out worldwide, but Sony has already promised more consoles by the end of the year. Hopefully, when they arrive they will no longer fall into the hands of scalpers, who have made it impossible to purchase a PlayStation 5.
