According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Public Health, about 14,000 new cases of cervical cancer are detected every year in Cameroon. After breast cancer, therefore, it is the deadliest today. And for doctors, screening remains the only effective way to combat this disease, which is fatal in case of complications.

According to doctors, this tumor manifests itself in abnormal bleeding in women observed after menstruation and during intercourse. The emergency is therefore reported and the Laquintinie hospital in Douala has made a qualitative leap in this direction, creating a free and permanent screening center for cervical cancer. Women don’t have to breathe a sigh of relief, as they won’t spend any more money to be screened for cervical cancer at this hospital.

The colposcopy center that has been opened is the solution found to encourage as many women as possible to be screened and to reduce the danger. In this center, in fact, the projections are now permanent and free of charge. The commencement of this commendable initiative was given during the hospital week celebration. According to Dr. Henri Essome, gynecologist and head of the center, the initiative started with a strong observation.

“It is that women do not stop. They die of this cancer which in addition to that does not stop crying our families because it has long been the second in Cameroon. Before becoming cancer, it will take 10 to 15 years to mutate. In relationship to this we tell ourselves what is the strategy to be adopted in a frontal and impactful way, hence this approach that took place during the hospital week which was an ideal framework to communicate and raise awareness, the goal was to achieve something quite innovative, ”explains Dr An’s innovation in Cameroon, which now includes Laquintinie hospital.

The service, we are told, is open every day of the week from Monday to Friday, and the patient’s only contribution is his physical presence. According to the doctor, the approach is clear, it is necessary to help the vulnerable layers that according to him are the most affected by this disease. And this requires consultation, early diagnosis and better care. As Dr. Henri Essome talked about it, “you can be cured of cancer, but you have to get tested on time”. And if the cost has so far been a drag for some, all women are given the opportunity to be tested in time.
