Dogs are better at detecting Covid-19 than testing

As part of their study, the researchers placed specially trained dogs to detect Covid-19 by smell at Helsinki airport.

The dogs stopped a lot of people who looked good and didn’t have symptoms like fever. Hence, swab tests performed by experts on these people came back negative.

However, a few days later it was found that all people whose first tests were negative had symptoms of Covid-19 and that their tests had turned positive.

Discovery experts found that dogs can detect them the first time the virus enters the body.

“This is a very important step forward for early diagnosis and treatment. They are also much more successful than swab tests,” said Anna Hielm-Bjorkman, principal investigator.

PCR swab tests are used to detect coronavirus cases around the world. However, the tests have a 70% success rate. It was claimed that this limited study with three dogs in Finland was 100% successful.

According to the researchers, when the corona virus settles in the human body, it causes changes in metabolism. This change in metabolism leads to a change in body odor. Dogs that can detect this smell can detect people with the corona virus.

EDUCATION STUDY STARTED IN UK

In England, Medical Detection Dogs has started an educational study for dogs to detect coronavirus patients.

Although it has been months since the project, which received £ 500,000 government support in April, no new announcements have been made regarding the officially commissioned dogs.

Company CEO Claire Guest said her dogs could detect diseases in less than a second.
