If there’s one thing Doctor Who fans love it’s the return of a classic monster, with all sorts of alien threats popping up over and over with great success since the revival of the series in 2005.
And while Jodie Whittaker’s first series as the Doctor avoided bad family members, in the last few episodes she’s faced the Daleks, the Cybermen, the Master and even Judoon – and according to series head Chris Chibnall this is just the beginning, with even more monsters returning. destined to appear in season 13 underway.
“Yes, more monsters are returning,” Chibnall tells the new Doctor Who preview issue Radio Times, now on sale.
“There are those who have appeared in the last 15 years who deserve another visit in the next series. In fact, they are probably formulating their plans as we speak … “
It is unknown exactly what monsters we might see, with Chibnall refusing to be drawn to spec, but fans may speculate that the likes of Sontaran, Ice Warriors, Silurian, Zygons, and even more recent enemies like the Weeping Angels or Slitheen must still appear in the Whittaker era, making them all contenders for another revival.
Alternatively, it could be those monsters they have already She has appeared in front of Whittaker as the Cybermen or Judoon are slated for another comeback – specifically, this year’s holiday special will be the second time she faces the Daleks, so it could be that more repeat offenders are coming to her.
And Chibnall also gave a hint as to where fans should look for these familiar foes, confirming that he had no plans to bring back any more monsters from the classic Doctor Who series of episodes beyond the ones that had already been in the modern series. Sorry, Sea Devil fans …
