In recent years, the home video industry has changed completely.
A couple of decades ago the plan was to rent a couple of DVD or Blu-ray movies from Blockbuster to watch at home. Now there are video streaming platforms like Netflix, Disney +, Amazon Prime Video, and HBO that have changed the landscape.
With the pandemic, these platforms have gained more and more strength and more and more people can access a gigantic catalog of audiovisual content from their television, computer or mobile phone. However, the greater the offer, the greater the confusion in deciding which service is best for us.

EL TIEMPO spoke to Juan Camilo Hernandéz, the cinephile behind ‘Novela Gráfica’ (one of the most powerful accounts specialized in cinema and streaming platforms in the country). Juan Camilo, who usually provides recommendations and reviews on the content available on each of these platforms, talked about which subscription service is best for you depending on what you consume.
“Each platform offers different content according to the taste of each person. Saying which is best is based on judgmental values and is very relative and questionable, so it depends on what the user is used to consuming, ”he says.
Disney Plus
Disney Plus is the latest platform to join the fray. It premiered on November 17 in the country and features Pixar movies and shorts, Marvel movies and series, all classic animations and live action from Disney, Star Wars and National Geographic.
First of all, Disney Plus is a journey into the past but of high quality. “If you and your family like to repeat the movies you saw in your childhood and the series you saw every day on the Disney Channel, Disney Plus is a great option. There you can find those productions that evoke the nostalgia of childhood, but in Full HD or 4K “, says Juan Camilo.
In addition to the unforgettable classics, this platform has high-level original productions such as “The Lady and the Tramp” in live-action, “The Mandalorian”, “High School Musical, the series”, among others.
But this is little compared to what will be found next year. “His muscles have not yet been seen in the original productions, which will change starting in the year 2021 when content such as “Falcon and the Winter Soldier”, “WandaVision” and “Loki”, among others, is released, “says the expert.

The price of this platform is not the highest among the subscription video services. It currently costs 23,900 pesos per month and 239,900 per year, both with a 7-day free trial.
Disney Plus can be viewed on four screens simultaneously and is compatible with televisions (Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, LG, Roku, Samsung), computers (Chrome OS, MacOS, Windows PC), mobile phones and tablets (Amazon Fire tablets, mobile phones and Android tablets , iPhone and iPad) and consoles (PS4 and Xbox One). It also has offline mode and the content can be downloaded.
“If you are a fan of Disney in general, it will be worth it.“Juan Camilo concludes.

“You don’t get bored with Amazon Prime Video. It has many previews, not necessarily fresh off the charts, and Contains the best content regarding the variety of tastes audiences can have, be it horror, suspense, drama, romantic comedies, thrillers, teen movies, etc. “says the expert.
Likewise, Prime Video has high quality original productions with a huge investment behind it like “The Boys”, “Hunters”, “Get on my motorcycle”, among many others.

“It’s my favorite platform. If an overall average of each platform’s original productions were made based on their quality, Amazon would take the lead even if it doesn’t have the most accolades., which are usually between HBO and Netflix. His original productions are made with great care and detail ”, assures Juan Camilo.
This platform is the cheapest among the ones we deal with in this article. It costs 14,900 pesos per month with a 30-day free trial.
Amazon Prime Video sWe can watch on three devices at the same time and it is compatible with all browsers, Android, iOS, Smart TV, consoles like PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Chromecast, Apple TV, Fire TV.
It is also linked to IMDb, therefore It has the ‘X-ray’ function, which allows us to obtain information about the actors and actresses who are appearing on the screen, the soundtrack and other curiosities. “If you’re curious about what’s behind each production, Amazon Prime Video will love you because it gives you information about everything on the screen instantly, just by pausing it,” says the movie buff.
Netflix
According to the ‘Graphic Novel’ expert, Netflix is the one taking command of what is talked about the most in Colombia: “It’s worth it because it has the largest number of subscribers in the country, so it has the automatic power to establish the agenda of trends in our area. If you are a person who wants to be aware of what is “in fashion” or what is “in the conversation”, you need to subscribe to this platform. Your top 10 can post conversation topics on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram”
While “they don’t have a positive average in terms of the quality of their original productions,” he has films that have competed for Oscars such as “Marriage Story” or “The Irishman”. Similarly, you can find series that have become social phenomena such as “Stranger Things”, “La casa de papel” or “Black Mirror”.
According to the expert, Netflix does not have an “enviable” variety and may fall a little short in terms of different genres such as fear, suspense, thriller, among others. Likewise, “they have an incredible ‘overproduction’ and every weekend they release movies and series, which can be overwhelming.”

It offers, like Amazon Prime, Full HD 1080p and 4K high definition playback. It also has multi-channel compatibility in audio systems and even HDR (High Dynamic Range) or Dolby Vision in multiple series and movies.
HBO
While not the most popular streaming service, HBO has millions of fans around the world. Its strength is the film premieres and major productions. “It’s a platform that has most of the new releases coming out of theaters and the one that gets them the fastest. This is its differential value. For example, “Bad Boys 3”, which was in the cinema at the beginning of the year, is about to arrive, “says Juan Camilo.
Despite has amazing original productions like “Watchmen”, “Euphoria”, “Game of Thrones”, “Chernobyl” which have been awarded and of great quality, “It doesn’t happen very often that HBO grabs the attention of the public, it’s rather with specific moments like when it starts winning awards and is recognized by critics and several academies,” says the cinephile.
HBO, what is priced at $ 33,900 per month, is quite criticized for its interface and playback quality, as it has an impoverished image and is one of the simplest and most careless applications of all existing payment platforms.
Juan Camilo, of ‘Novela Gráfica’, says that “the interface looks awful to me, it’s slow, it’s not very intuitive, its search bar is very limited. The categories it has are good but I don’t like the platform in terms of interface ”.
