It started as a nation saying goodbye to its football idol, but ended up in chaos. In the wake of Diego Maradona, who passed away on Wednesday, violent clashes broke out between mourners and police.
When the police closed the line of mourners who had not yet reached the coffin in the “Casa Rosada” in Buenos Aires, the disappointed fans broke down the barriers and raided the government building. Maradona’s coffin was then taken to a safe place in another room within the seat of government.
The police used rubber bullets and tear gas and water cannons arrived. Argentine media showed photos and videos of chaotic scenes on the Internet. The policemen were hit with bottles and stones in the streets in front of “Casa Rosada”.
The government initially decided to extend access to Maradona’s coffin by three hours until 19:00 local time (23:00 CET). At around 5pm local time, however, the staging was canceled and the palace doors closed.
Maradona died on Wednesday at the age of 60. Thousands of followers have greeted their idol since the early hours of the morning. According to his family’s will, Maradona will be buried Thursday in a private cemetery on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, local media reported.
