Gervonta Davis eliminated Yuriorkis Gamboa with a 12th round TKO last December. Perhaps Devin Haney could make a statement in the lightweight division by defeating Gamboa faster on Saturday night.
Haney will stake her WBC title against Gamboa Yuriorkis at Hard Rock Live at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, live on DAZN. This will mark the second title defense for Haney, who hasn’t fought since November 2019, when he scored a unanimous decision over Alfredo Santiago. Haney underwent shoulder surgery shortly after the fight and had plenty of time to recover, as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic wiped out some of his combat plans earlier this year.
Now, just days after turning 22, “The Dream” can’t wait to get back into the ring. And Haney (24-0, 15 KOs) vows not to make the mistake of taking Gamboa lightly.
“Yuriokis Gamboa is a dangerous and experienced fighter,” said Haney. “He’s a former unified world champion, and he’s been in the ring with some of the best. He hurt Terence Crawford with a big blow, so his power is not to be ignored. He beat Orlando Salido who beat Vasiliy Lomachenko. Less than a year ago he took Gervonta Davis to round 12, which no one has ever been able to do Gamboa is a true warrior and I don’t take him lightly.
“I’ve called all the top names, and finally I have someone who will challenge me for my title,” he continued. “I’m going to make a statement in this fight. My hunger is on another level. It’s time to show the world who the best boxing fighter is and it’s me!”
While the likes of newly crowned unified world lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez Jr., Davis, the WBA (Regular) lightweight title holder and Ryan Garcia have a lot to say about this within the division, there is is doubtful Haney’s boxing skills. That said, Gamboa will observe the upset he didn’t have with Davis. Gamboa is also coming out of surgery, his to repair the torn Achilles he suffered against Davis.
Will Haney say he craves or will 38-year-old Gamboa prove he still has a lot to offer sweet science?
