British comedian and TV presenter Des O’Connor passed away and died Saturday in a hospital in south-east England at the age of 88. This was announced on Sunday by his agent Pat Lake-Smith.

O’Connor had been hospitalized a week earlier after a fall at his home in Buckinghamshire, but according to Lake-Smith, he had actually recovered well. “Last night his condition suddenly worsened and he died peacefully in his sleep,” the statement read.

The entertainer, who began his career on the stages of the British military, has hosted his show on British television for over 45 years. He has also appeared in many other television shows such as “Take Your Pick” or “Countdown” and was also a singer on stage again and again.

“He loved life and thought enthusiasm was almost as important as oxygen,” wrote the agent, calling him “the ultimate entertainer.” O’Connor’s wife and four daughters are shocked by his death. Some celebrities from politics, media and society have also expressed their great sadness, reports the BBC, among others.
